How can I help my students to better achieve literacy success?
Abstract
I came to graduate school immediately after I graduated from college with a degree in Elementary Education. I chose the New Literacies and Global Learning program, because I wanted to be the best possible teacher of literacy for my students and in the future, I hope to work as a Reading Specialist. In my opinion, literacy is one the most important aspects of teaching and is the basis for a students' life success. If students are not able to read, they are unable to face the many challenges of life. Therefore, my guiding question throughout my graduate experience was, "How can I help my students to better achieve literacy success?" Over the course of my graduate program, I have learned how to best meet the needs of my students and how to drive my instruction to help them to best reach literacy goals. I believe there are four main components that help students to best meet literacy goals: Motivation, Teacher Knowledge, Assessment, and Instruction. |
About Me
My name is Mary-Vaughan Spruill. I graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in Elementary Education, Roll Tide. Currently, I am in graduate school at North Carolina State University in the New Literacies and Global Learning program to get my master's in Reading K-12, in hopes to one day become a Reading Specialist. After graduating from The University of Alabama in the Spring of 2014, I spent a year traveling. I then began my master's program in the of Fall 2015. During my time at North Carolina State University, I began working as a teacher assistant in two first grade classrooms which has been an incredible learning experience and has given me even more confidence in my teaching. I plan to move into a teaching position Fall 2017 and hope to eventually move into a Reading Specialist position when the time comes.
